Welcome to SnackFace, kidlets!

I am Kailey, a senior magazine journalism student in the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University. If you’ve heard anything about OU it’s probably about its partying abilities, which are outrageous and often too much for me. That’s not to say I don’t enjoy it… πŸ™‚

In high school my goal was to get into the Scripps program so that I can fulfill my dreams. I’d absolutely LOVE to write and edit a magazine.Β  Any of the following would be ideal: Food & Wine, Travel+Leisure, VegNews, Bon Appetit, EatingWell, Women’s Health, Gourmet, Vogue, W, Glamour…the list goes on. And the ultimate goal? To host my own show on the Travel Channel.Β I know these goals are lofty, but I’m still goin’ for it!

I’ve dabbled in many, many activities. Plays, musicals, varsity golf (3 years- I’m BAD though), choirs, hip-hop dance team, cheerleading (when I was 12-15 years old, then I believe I physically outgrew it- you can’t be 5’10” and do a back handspring comfortably!). I’m probably forgetting some activities. Here’s me breakin’ it down though:

I am not ashamed.

I am not ashamed.

I worked for OU’s student-run paper for a year, writing for the culture staff. Experiences at the paper combined with this little blog led me to nail my dream internship for Summer 2009. In San Francisco, I was fortunate enough to be an editorial assistant at VegNews magazine. I’d go back in a heartbeat.Β  Now that I’m back in Ohio, Women’s Chorale and Tempo Tantrums help keep me busy and sane. Women’s chorale is more formal and counts as credit, and TTs is an a capella group for which I had to audition. We sing killer popular songs and have a blast doing it!

Another lil’ something I’ve dabbled in is modeling. I’ve never done anything huge, but have had a few interesting jobs. I’ve also done a lot of modeling for students on campus.

When I’m not doing those things, I’m spending time with the people I love. First and foremost, there is my family, who resides in Cincinnati, where I grew up. I miss the ‘Nati!! My family is small, but wonderful. My dad calls us “the unit” and hates it whenever any part of “the unit” isn’t home. I am close with Popsicle, Matty Rich (my 18-year-old brother) and most of all, Mama J. Mom and I are supah tight. We can talk about anything and often have the same thoughts. She’s the most hilarious person I know. I LOVE MY FAMILY!!! (That includes the pups, Sheba and Cia).
Then there are the friends whom I love so dearly.Β Here is a lovely lady with whom you’ll see me a lot:
Sam Ronson, Lindsay Lohan

Miss Ashley and I are together…whenever possible. She’s my Muffin.

My roomie, Morgan, is fabulous as well. We’ve been roommates since freshman year.

This blog will reveal my eats,Β schoolwork and life in general. I’m optimistic, vivacious and often sarcastic (be prepared). I want to share my college experience–the goods, bads, uglies. Mostly goods, though.Β You’ll learn more wacky details about me fa sho (I love Weezy, I’m a bit OCD, I always carry two different flavors of gum with me…just a few examples).

That’s the story for now…stay tuned πŸ™‚

Thank you for reading!!!

  5. Wow, girl, that really DOES look like a Gap ad!!!

To answer your question from my blog: Yeah, I think the homemade yogurt would pobably be cheaper. I think it tastes better too because you get to control the amount of sugar you put in, whereas store-bought vegan yogurt is always so sickly-sweet (the reason I don’t like it). Sadly, my version doesn’t have any probiotics… but it’s still healthy because it’s made with tofu and fruit :o).

    • 6 snackface

Thanks for the info about the yogurt- I’m pumped! Also, thanks so much for commenting and replying!

Aunt Doodle- OH MY GOSH!!! I’m SOOOO happy you’re reading now! You can stay in tune with everything I’m doing! I reeeeeally hope you come out to San Fran this summer! I miss you so much and love you to bits!

  30. HAHAH!!! How did I just NOW see the picture of you and Muffin as Sam Ron and Lilo? I’m dying!

  31. 37 Marisa

I have to tell you that I love your blog! I originally read a blog on self.com about a nutritionist, then I found a link to another blog called ‘Iowa Girl Eats’. After that I found a link to a blog called ‘Fitnessista’, and then I stumbled upon your blog. I can’t get enough of reading food blogs because I always wished I would have the will power to eat as healthy as you and some other bloggers do. Don’t get me wrong, there’s foods that I generally try avoid like greasy foods, soda, chips, etc (unless I’m somewhere where those are the only foods available.) I’m mainly addicted to sweets. It’s been hard because I’ve gone through anorexia and a binge eating disorder both within the last 2 years. I’m just recently overcoming my binge eating disorder and trying to eat healthier. I’ve always wanted to start a food blog of my own but my eating habits aren’t the greatest. Ex.-lunch is sometimes ice cream, and other times I hardly eat anything for lunch or breakfast so it wouldn’t be a good example to post any of that. I’m hoping that reading these blogs will get me back on the right track as far as eating goes. I also have to mention that you are really gorgeous and I love your modeling pics. I’m 5’5″ and you look to be around my height, how tall are you?

    • 38 snackface

Marisa- Thank you so much for reading! I actually started food-blog reading the same exact way! First it was Self’s blog, then Kath, then Jenna’s…you know how it goes. I am terribly sorry to hear about your struggles, but I know you can get through this. I hope that by reading my blog it helps a bit! I eat a lot of everything, including chips and sweets occasionally, but I think it’s all a part of healthy eating. Also, thank you for the compliments! I’m actually 5’10”!

  32. stumbled across your blog today, loove it and added it to my google reader πŸ™‚ cant wait to read more!!

    • 40 snackface

Ally – Thank you so much for reading le SnackFace AND for adding me to your reader! You have no idea how happy that makes me!

  33. 41 Nicole

Hey! I have been reading your blog forEVER and I absolutely love it. I have a question for you..and I can’t find your email address on the blog. I was wondering if you could please email me so I could ask it to you! I really need some advice. Thank you so much!! (:

    • 42 snackface

  34. just stumped upon your blog from homegirl…your blog rocks! going to have lots of fun reading it. just started my own- check it

    xo, whit

  35. Waaaait, we are a lotttttt alike. Except I never dabbled in modeling. I’m 5 foot 2 soo, yea, there’s that… Always love finding fellow journalism gals trying to do something healthy and/or food-related with their writing skills! We may or may not share the dream of hosting a Travel Channel show. I seriously have more ideas to pitch to a TC producer than I know what to do with… I’d prob settle for Food Network, too πŸ™‚ We should probably track some network execs down asap a pitch a show where we co-host… si? Haha

  36. 45 biddy2bites

Hi Kailey! I have been reading your blog for about a year and have been trying to start my own as well. I am college student and have the many pressures of over eating, the dining hall, and binge drinking. How do you cope with all of it and still lead a healthy lifestyle? after one night of drinking and then eating I feel like I have fell off the wagon. any suggestions?

  37. 46 JHunt

Those modeling pics are gorgeous! Some of those magazines are my favorite and hosting a show on the travel channel would me incredible. Great blog! πŸ™‚

  38. Okay I’m insanely jealous of your life…want to switch?! Just found your blog, it’s great. I started my own and it’s alot to learn …but I love it and I adore writing…I really wish I could do it for a living. It’s what seems to make me happiest. Yet, it’s so hard to break into and I have no idea where to go with it. After 2 degrees (PT)..I can’t afford to go back to school and have loan debts , oi :(…any thoughts/advice would be appreciated so much please !! If I could get a job blogging/writing for a magazine, well I think I would just….I don’t know what I would do …explode !! haha – yeah there are no words. Your absolutely beautiful too…and no I like guys haha..but aren’t all girls pretty of the insanely pretty ones – lucky you :). Take care.

    • 48 snackface

eatmovelove – Awww there is no need to be jealous! I have no clue what I’m doing after I graduate! Hahaha. And I really think you can write for a living despite your education background. Freelancing, blogging, online journalism — it’s all super hot right now. If you’re looking for a killer internship or job opportunities in the journalism field, I recommend Ed2010.com. You’ll find that a lot of the jobs listed are online, and therefore you can be anywhere in the country. Most requirements aren’t necessarily journalism backgrounds, either. But this is coming from someone who’s only had one amazing magazine internship, so I may not know what I’m talking about! Haha. And you’re too sweet for the compliments!

  39. Hi Kailey, I just found your blog and am looking forward to reading more of your positive and spiffy blog! You’re seem to have the world at your feet πŸ™‚

  40. Kaileyyy I love this and I’m SO surprised I haven’t found aka stalked your bloggie before because it’s awesome!! Love all the pics and how upbeat and sarcastic you are… quite fun to read haha πŸ™‚ Not to mention you’re gaaaw-geous! (love the model pics!!!!) Can’t wait to read more & I’m adding you to my bloglist as we speak… πŸ™‚

    • 51 snackface

Allison – Ahhh! Welcome to SnackFace! I am so happy you’ve found me πŸ™‚ And thank you for the ridiculously sweet compliments!

  41. Kailey–what beautiful photos (especially love the mock David Yurman…it’s right on the dot). I have been reading your blog for a little while now and you ALWAYS entertain me and inspire me to try new eats!! I love that you are so passionate about writing and CONGRATS on your internship!!! It sounds like it’s right up your alley.

    πŸ™‚ So jealous.

I recently started up my own blog at http://saraheatsbythebay.wordpress.com. It’s tough to start and trying to find a direction for all of my random thoughts and ideas, but hey, it’s something I’ve been DYING to do for a few months now! Oh, and if you don’t mind I will add you to my slow-growing blog roll!!

  42. Hi! Ive been reading your blog for ages, but i just found out that you go to OU and are in the scripps program. I am applying to OU and scripps as an imcoming freshman and I am so excited and hopeful. Woulf you mind telling me a little bit about the campus? Do you think it would be easy to eat a vegan diet on campus? Is it true the campus is spread out really far? Do you enjoy the scripps program?
My email is michal.mymo@gmail.com just in case.
I hope you dont mind πŸ™‚ Thanks!

  43. Hi Kailey! I actually stumbled across your blog as I was researching what to expect for my internship, since I start with VegNews in January. LOVE the blog…totally inspires me to eat healthier and stop doing so much vegan baking. Anyway, keep up the good work and drop me a line if you’re ever back in the Bay Area!

    • 55 snackface

kristen- Ahhh!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!! You are making me so jealous. I miss VegNews and the crew every single day. It was the best experience of my life. Please feel free to email me if you have any questions! Ahhh! I can’t wait to hear about your experience! And I wish I knew when I’d be back in the Bay Area 😦 I LOVE it so much!

  44. LOVE your blog!!!!

MY EMAIL IS BUSTED and I LOST YOUR EMAIL with your address for NuNaturals!

I AM SO SORRY – can you email it to me at BOTH emails below

I need to get you your gift today!!

  46. Hey! I just found your blog linked on the Queen of PB’s and she’s right, you’re totally awesome! I was also a 5’9 gymnast, haha. I’ve also dabbled in modeling, mostly runway work though, and to be honest, I hate it :\ I’d like to try a little more printwork though just to see what it’s like, and mostly just to get paid :X
We also eat the same foods- as in copious amounts of the best things ever.
So it sounds like you live in Hoboken and work in the city? What is that like? I’m a Spanish Interpreter in Houston, but am looking to move to NY, hopefully next year at some point. There is a lot of work for me in NY, and I’d love to live in the city, but I’m not sure if that’s realistic financially so I’ve heard Hoboken is a good alternative. I’d love to hear more about that.
Feel free to check out my blog even though I hardly ever write, I’m trying to get better at it!
You are being added to my blogroll πŸ™‚

    • 59 snackface

Gaby! You are so sweet! Thanks for finding me! Gah, I’m jealous of your modeling opportunities. I really don’t have the super-thin body for it anymore, especially not runway. I’m definitely more commercial! But if I were you, I’d take that chance to model in NY. Living in Hoboken would be a cheaper option, for sure. It’s a nice, quiet, college-esque town with all the health markets you could ever want. The transit to the city couldn’t be easier, either! Most of all, though, I urge you to take the opportunity to model here now. Pleeeease! πŸ™‚ xoxo

      • Yay for quick responses!
Well, the work would be Interpreting not modeling hehe. Unless of course, someone wants to pay me a lot for it, I’d be ok with that. I do have the runway body, though the designers I”ve worked with don’t require it, and to be honest, that “ideal” runway look is not all that useful for every day life like getting dates or finding clothes. But I don’t want to complain, I’m all about body acceptance and love, plus my mom assures me that one day I’ll reach menopause and never burn off fat again.
You are gorgeous in all your pics btw!
I’ll definitely have to take a trip to Hoboken and check it out next time I’m in NY, it sounds cute! I hope I get to move sometime next year, it’s such a fun city, AND has so many great bloggers I’d get to hang out with!!!! πŸ˜€

  47. I just found your blog today through PB&J and I’ve already added you to my reader! I was going back through past posts of yours and I saw you used to have issues with repeat sinus infections… Noticed the past tense of that sentence and had to ask how you’ve gotten past that?! I’ve been dealing with them constantly for the past two years and would love any advice you could give! Thanks so much and keep up the good work!

    • 62 snackface

NySoonerGirl- Hello darling! Thanks for finding me! My sinus tale started when I was in 7th or 8th grade. I got horrible infections that only got worse. After intense medication rounds, I continued to get them, so I went through many examinations and a CT scan. They found polyps, which are growths that can turn cancerous, in my sinus cavities above and below my eyes. I had a nasty surgery to remove them, and since then, my problems have lightened. The polyps were blocking my snot from flowing! Now that it’s not trapped and doesn’t sit there and fester, I have fewer problems. I also had a ton of airborne allergies that I’ve grown out of. I do, however, occasionally get nasty sinus headaches, but it’s nothing Advil Cold+Sinus, caffeine and a hot shower can’t help. I hope this helps!

  48. Hey girl,

I found your blog through Jenny’s and I love it! Too funny! I’m so excited to find another tall girl with a food blog!!! (I’m 5’10”, too). Also…uhh, your sweet potato “cheetah taters”!!!!
