Day Tripper

26Mar10

Hello my lovely friends! I’m so sorry to dip out on you for a day, but I’ve been busy eating Ohio. Grab a snack and a cold one, because this is going to be a heifer of a post.

Wednesday morning I arose to an empty house and an impending dentist appointment. What better way to prepare for such an event than eat:

All you need to know about these oats: peanut buttery perfection.

An hour or so after breakfast, I did 15 minutes of abs and headed to the lake for a quick run. It took less than 30 minutes, but it was just enough to know that I am a physical being, rather than a giant lump. Once back at the H-Unit household, I worked the arms in Popsicle’s bossy weight room.

The dentist appointment took 20 minutes, and afterward I ruined my sparkling teeth with some greenage:

Spinach salad with sprouts, mushrooms, faux bacon, hummus and a whole wheat pita.

I balanced any nutritional benefits of the salad with:

A few giant forkfuls of carrot cake.

I wanted to snooze after that. Alas, I pulled myself from the couch and drove to the mall. Could I get any girlier? Cake and malls, come ON, Kailey.

While trying on semi-skanky shorts for warmer weather (what? It’s OK as long as you own it), I selected an adorable little dress:

Call me Mrs. Flinstone, I can make your bed rock. A little Pebbles, no?

The thing about being a tall chick is that I sometimes can’t tell whether clothing items are dresses or shirts. I’m thinking this would actually be a:

Shirt. That's about two seconds away from a full moon.

I spent the rest of the night with Muffin! We had a blast rolling around town with her childhood besties and popping into a biker bar for approximately one minute.

This morning, MamaJ woke me up and said we were day tripping. I’m always down for that! After a breakfast of peanut butter-topped cereal (for me) and oats (for MamaJ), we hit the road with one destination in mind:

Pattycake Bakery!

Pattycake Bakery is an all-vegan, absolutely adorable bakery in Columbus, Ohio. I had my first bite of Pattycake wondrousity when interning with VegNews. I was so proud they were from the OH! I urge you to head to their utterly darling site and order something amazing. Here’s a gander:

I want it all.

Marry Me Blueberry muffins.

Get in my mouth.

Peanut butter and jelly cake. Done.

Of course we bought a piece. And many other goodies.

I have yet to sink my ever-whitening teeth (a spring break project) into the $26 of cake, cookies, whoopie pies and muffins that we bought, but I know they will all be gasmic.

Post sweet-tooth shopping spree, MamaJ and I were hangry. We hit up the nearby Mediterranean restaurant, LΓ‘vash CafΓ©, for lunch:

MamaJ, pumped to feast.

We ordered the essentials:

Pita wedges. The owner delivered homemade bread a bit later. Cutie.

And we both ordered this delightful plate:

Lavash salad, dolmas, hummus and falafel. I could eat this every day.

Aftermath:

Killed it. HOW I DO.

Our Columbus culinary tour did not end there, though. A couple weeks ago, Matty Rich was watching The Best Thing I Ever Ate, spicy foods episode. He gasped in delight and shock that one of the places featured was an ice cream shop in Columbus. So, naturally, MamaJ and I had to find it and check it out.

I fell in love as soon as we stepped inside:

Maybe I just love cute chalkboards.

Specifically, we were searching for one ice cream at Jeni’s:

Queen City Cayenne, after my hometown!

Don’t think the irony of featuring a vegan bakery and an ice creamery in one post has passed me. I recognize that I am a joke. Anyway, we bought a pint of that little lovely for MattyRich! I also tried Pear Riesling sorbet, and it blew my mind. Please check out Jeni’s website for all the insane flavors. Here are a few more:

Crazy. Sarah, you would die over these flavors. And Brooke, they had a chocolate cornflake something. Yeah.

Despite not devouring baked goods and ice cream, I am still full from lunch. That was six hours ago. It has been a good day. A very good day.

Ciao for now,

Kailey

  35. Seriously, how do you get your PB to do dat?? It looks so runny and luscious…how much is on that bowl? Dang it looks good.

    • 47 snackface

Alice- OK, so the peanut butter is Kroger Natural Creamy, and we don’t refrigerate it. I’ve never had any pb this drippy before. And honestly, what you see there isn’t even an entire spoonful! It’s just a bit! (As in, not even 1 tbsp.)

  36. That looks like some serious good eating!!! You and your mom are so cute having fun together. Isn’t it great being close to your momma? πŸ˜€ She looks awesome too! As well as you in that cute top. Glad you went for a top instead of dress. Haha!

Tina- There is not a moment that goes by that I don’t realize how truly blessed I am. She is the world to me. I’ve even written essays about her.

  37. 50 Nicky

The three flavas in that last photo are EXACTLY what I’d choose. I know I don’t know what others they do. I don’t need to.

  38. Haha, that looks like a fun and fiesty day. I hope all those beautiful treats get savored!

  39. That bakery is adorable!!! I want to be there NOW. haha
Cute dress pictures – although being 5’10, there’s no way I could wear it as a dress either! Yikes.
Glad you had such a fab day. Your mom is super cute:D

  40. 54 HannahMarie

OMG Jeni’s is right down the street from my house!! Next time you should hit up Stauf’s too- the BEST. COFFEE/TEA. EVER. Or maybe I’m just Stauf’s-obsessed because I’m a grad student and spend many nights squatting there…??. I’ve stopped by Jeni’s a couple of times, but their line is always so long and gives me time to contemplate how I probably don’t really “need” ice cream. However, I’ve decided I “need” to wait it out this summer sometime because that ice cream “needs” to get in my belly! They have outrageously yummy-sounding flavors! Have you been to the North Market or Northstar Cafe? You would love both of those places I think!

    • 55 snackface

HannahMarie- Yes, you NEED to wait it out. It’s beyond worth it. MamaJ even tried fig and goat cheese ice cream. Outrageous. And I totally need to check out both of those places!

  41. 56 HannahMarie

P.S.- Stauf’s also sells PattyCake treats I think.

Just to come full circle =)

  42. My mouth is literally watering from those bakery pics!!!

PS…Did you receive my package yet?? πŸ™‚

  43. magnificent day of eats, shopping and straight CHILLIN. want to trade lives for a little bit? work is really fun and awesome, i promise.

  44. Kale babes! You are so damn cute!!!! I am absolutely obsessed with those heels–they look so adorable on you. But that shirt/dress?! Pshh, you could rock it! HAHA

Vegan carrot cake?! Pb & Jelly cake?! Queen City Cayenne (uhh, i’d love that–always down for some extra spiciness!)!??! Mediterranean food?! Helllllllo food porn.

You and mamaj make me miss my own mamaj (aka jeany babes) !! I hope you’re still having the greatest time! Love you!

  45. so many things to love in this post! i love massive ones (TWSS). your legs are so sassy in the shirt/dress photos. haha. skanky shorts. love you and love summertime. i LOVE the name of that bakery and the sign out front. who doesnt love a cupcake with a face? 55. Kailey! As a Columbus native I LOVED the post!! πŸ™‚ I am obsessed with Jeni’s and actually just went there with some girlfriends a couple days ago! They have amazing seasonal ice cream flavors too, like pumpkin in fall, strawberries in summer etc. So you will have to make multiple trips back to check it out!! Also, last summer a friend and I tried to stop at every single greek food place in Columbus and Lavash was amazing! The owner makes it a point to talk to every customer and aren’t the decorations on the inside so cute? ha sorry for the random comment I just, of course, am thrilled to see some of my favorite Columbus eats πŸ™‚
