Sunny Side Up!

Ay baybays! Thank you all SO MUCH for reading my magazine feature piece. It means the world to me that you read it and thought it was somewhat decent. It shouldn’t work this way, but it takes reassurance from others to feel great about my own gifts. Anyone else like that? Anyway, Friday was wonderfully sunny and happy, and today has been as equally splendid. Let’s play catch-up!

I woke up ravenous and immediately got to work carefully dicing, slicing, piling and stirring my breakfast:

Tropical mess with Koffee

Tropical mess with Koffee

In the bowl: 1/2 mango, 1/2 naner, 1/2 C fat free plain yogurt, kamut puffs, Kashi Go Lean, flax sprinkles and Naturally More peanut butter. I was wary of the mango-peanut-butter combo, but let’s be real. Peanut butter loves anything sweet, and so does SnackFace.

I hung out in mi casa for a couple hours, digesting and reading blogs when a package of VitaMuffins arrived. YES! I finally get to see what these little discs are all about. Excited, I got ready for the gym and headed out.

The sweatfest was marvelous. I read a music magazine, Bust, while ellipticizing and did some abs-tacular work. MisterMan picked me up from the gym (and my roomie, coincidentally) and we stopped by the barber shop so I could give them a copy of the story. I walk in and Alan says, “you know this man,” and points to his left. Hmmm, nope, no clue. Turns out, he was my magazine professor’s husband, and he had read the story! Alan was teasing me and saying they had the inside scoop–supposedly I received a good grade. Who knows!

But anyway, look at this PEANUT BUTTER FUDGE Alan made for my family:

I have no words

I have no words

I think I’ve eaten fudge once or twice before, but I am not messing around when I say this is the most incredible fudge. Ever. It tastes like Reeces peanut butter. Not the cups, but the peanut butter inside. I had a few pieces throughout the day 🙂

MisterMan and I had poolside plans, so I made a quick snacky lunch to take with me:

Kashi TLC Roasted Almond bars and Green Smoothie (not monster)

Kashi TLC Roasted Almond bars and Green Smoothie (not monster)

In the smoothie that totally got stuck in my teeth: enormous handful of spinach, 1/2 mango, watermelon, 1/2 C soy milk, 1/2 C water, spoon of flax, blueberries on the bottom. It was delicious and perfect for…:

Legs and POOL!

Legs and POOL!

Take a closer look at that pool. It’s half full! Haha, I didn’t mind. I felt as though I was at a hotel anyway, when it was really just MisterMan’s apartment complex. It got so hot it was almost unbearable, though, and we left after an hour and a half. I can’t stand just lying there for much longer. Oh! And I was SPF-ed.

My lovepie drove me home and I finally showered my stank away. I ate a scrumptious dinner before I packed up to go home. First, I needed to use up some chickpeas and romaine before I left. Okay, no. I just wanted a salad:

Chickpea Corn Salad

Chickpea Corn Salad

The greens: romaine, chickpeas, corn, green bell pepper, celery, roasted almond slivers. This was dressed with pink raspberry vinaigrette after the photo. The second component was purely out of craving. It needs no explanation:

Surprisingly, I was somewhat full after that, but the freezer was calling my name. Must. Try. VitaTops! Double Chocolate, here I come:

Double Chocolate (I think?) VitaTop

Double Chocolate (I think?) VitaTop

At 100 calories, 6 grams of fiber and 3 grams of protein, this was a delightful way to end a meal. Yes, it was a little SnackWells-tasting, but I also kinda liked that about it. It was also dense and chewy, easy to pop in the micro and rather filling. My concern is that they have 2 grams of sugar alcohols in them, and I can’t figure out from what source that comes. Anyone know?

After dinner I packed my thangs and hopped into Muffins car. I love our long car rides home together! I hadn’t seen her in five or six days, so we talked, laughed and sang our ways to Cincinnati.

Popsicle met us outside my house when we came home, and Poppy and I shared a huge bear hug. LOVE my Popsicle! MamaJ, Matty Rich, Popsicle and I spent the night catching up and loving one another’s company.

I stayed up super late and SnackFaced my way through Grey’s Anatomy episodes. I am caught up to watch the finale tonight, and I know I am going to be a slobbery, snotty mess after this. Snacks included chips and salsa and generic Wheat Thins. With White Chocolate Wonderful. I hit the hay at 3:30 a.m.

MamaJ woke me up at 10:30 a.m. so that I had ample time to schedule classes for fall quarter (my time was 11:30 a.m. and it’s always a hot mess trying to get into classes). My little Peanut, Cia (her real name), also hopped on the bed to sniff me and wake me. She’s a tiny 13-year-old basenji puppy. Can a dog be 13 years old and still be called a puppy?

After I scheduled, MamaJ and I went to Kroger to get fixins for brunch. Oh my gosh was it ever amazing:

Peaches and pancake!

Peaches and pancake!

MamaJ was inspired by a Food & Wine recipe for grilled pound cake and peaches, so she spun it breakfast style. For the pancakes she used Hodgson Mill Whole Wheat Buttermilk pancake mix, which is dense, chewy, crunchy and nutty. She brushed the peaches with a combo of butter and maple syrup (both real) and grilled them on the Foreman. Incredible:

Not once did I feel weighed down by this plate-sized pancake breakfast, but it kept me full for more than four hours. This is HUGE, as I am hungry all the time.

MamaJ and I spent the afternoon:
-catching up on The Hills
-talking about how I need to replace my ProActiv with something more natural and less expensive (ADVICE???)
-droppin’ the top of her Benz and rollin’ around Cincinnati
-shopping for a dress for her to wear tomorrow
-buying groceries

When my personality disappears, I know I need to eat. This happened when we were shopping for groceries at Bigg’s (grocery store), so MamaJ told me to select a bar. This took me at least 10 minutes, but I made the best choice. I may seem dramatic in this post, but I had the best bar I’ve had in a very long time. KIND bars, I love you:

Almond Coconut KIND bar

Almond Coconut KIND Fruit + Nut bar. Eaten in the store 🙂

KIND, I thank you for making this piece of glory. It was as though I was eating an enormous, chewy, and sometimes crunchy, macaroon. Pure ingredients, pure nutrion, pure deliciousness. Because I enjoyed this so much, I am going to share the ingredients and nutritionals. Well, only the nutritionals at which I look.
-Ingredients: almonds, honey, shredded coconut, coconut chips, glucose, puffed rice, chicory fiber, soy lecithin.
-Nutritional Stats: 190 cals (though the wrapper printed 200), 4 g fiber, 11 g sugar, 4 g protein.

MamaJ now is cooking dinner, Popsicle is grilling, Matty Rich is playing video games and I am sipping Blackstone Riesling 2008 while blogging. I cannot wait to sit down to a lovely family dinner! Tomorrow marks the graduation of my baby brother, and, of course, some following celebrations. Therefore, I may not back until Sunday. I’ll miss you, sunshines!

I hope you’re all having beautiful Fridays and weekends!

Ciao for now,

QUESTION: What skin care products do you use?
I know people have asked what I use, which is ProActiv, but I am looking to change this. My skin isn’t as crazy hormonal now, and it’s time for something less expensive. I have somewhat sensitive skin, so I’m unsure of what to try! OH! And for those who have asked for a makeup post, too, don’t you worry your pretty little heads. I’m meditating on it for a while in order to deliver the best directions, etc. Love you all, pooks!

p.s. As I edit this, I realize I should note: the title isn’t directly related to the contents of this post, other than the fact that it has been sunny, which is up!

LOVE your feature piece– you are really amazing girl and thanks for sharing!!

OMGOMGOMG STOP USING PROACTIVE!!! i used to work as a skin care specialist at CO bigelow– BOSCIA is an excellent brand that is all natural and will help your skin achieve an even pH level– you can find it at sephora. i highly reccommend their facewashes and the willow bark acne treatment!! its awesome!!!
proactive is NOT good for your skin as it contains benzoyl peroxide– hence the orangey color you my notice that it leave on towels!! hope this helps!! let me know if you have any questions!!

LOVE LOVE LOVE ur food– arent vitas the best 🙂 mmmmm!!!

have a great day girl! xo

  2. Loverly pooltime, eats, and just everything! WAtching yo bro graduate is surely gonna be a sight to see, I know it was for me last week!

    Enjoy your weekend 😉

  3. I forgot to comment on your article.. I read it today and loved it you have descriptive lively writing. I’m the exact same way I need peoples reassurance and compliments to make me feel like I am doing well. Mmm the crack wrap looks fantastic! I don’t use many skin products accept for moisturizer because I find when I do try to clean my skin up it breaks out more so I usually just wash my face and sometimes use my St.Ives Apricot exfoliater to get off the dead skin. I have pretty dry skin so thats another reason why I can’t use many products with out my skin peeling – gross!

    That PB fudge looks amazing!!!

Love the pool picture, I wish I could be poolside right now.

I use Eminence Organics face wash and creams. They are very expensive though so I’m actually looking for a new kind myself. I’m just hoping that when I make the switch my face doesn’t go all crazy! haha

    That pancake! *drools*

philosophy skincare products have always worked well for me.

enjoy your weekend with the fam! and the fudge looks amazing!

bah ya I totaly thought you had eggs or something with the title. I use clinique on my skin and have for 8 years, its still fairly pricey compared to drug store brands but it lasts longer and professionals help you figure out what you need

  7. 7 sue

sounds like the perfect day and i loved your feature btw, and so sweet that alan made you fudge (YUMM!) lately, i’ve been using skin care products from a japanese mail order company (, i also like dermalogica but that stuffs not cheap!

    c. i loooove kind bars.

    d. i was going to make a v. inappropriate comment about

Um.. jealous of your breakfast, of the pool and sun, of the Vitatops, and of the PB fudge. Yeah, basically I’m jealous of you right now. Hahha have a fabulous weekend girly!! I used to have terrible skin so I use prescription face lotion but besides that, I’m pretty basic when it comes to skincare..

I don’t know what is more gorgeous, those long lovely legs or that crack wrap. Geez, that sounds creepy!

My Mama L loves the Kind bars but I haven’t tried one yet!

I have NO skin care routine. Sorry. And so are my pores.

    Have a fabulous weekend!

  11. hahahaha i’m laughing so hard from the d. point of erin’s comment….us college girls are sooo mature, aren’t we?! 🙂

My personality also disappears when i’m hungry, so I feel ya on needing that bar, and I’m glad it got the job done!! I’ve only tried one KIND flavor, but i’ll have to try more after that review!!

Are you done?!!?! Congratssssss, summa time baby!

And how is that crack wrap picture so beautifulllll?! The wrap is obvs beautiful, but the reflection or lighting makes that picture just straight-up fancy!

Mama J’s pancakes are looking goooood, glad you’re enjoying your time back at home! Love you kailey!

  12. 12 rediscoveringlauren

    hi girlie
ohmygosh those pancakes look SO good 🙂 mmmm!
when i get hungry, i just feel cold and tired, thats how i know i need some fuel! that kind bar looks SO good! i love almonds and cocnut so id say that bar would be one id really like!
Im glad youve had such a nice friday so far hun,
    much love

A half-full pool is way better than a half-empty one, or none at all, which is what I’m dealing with. Just looking at a body of water when it’s hot out as an amazing cooling effect. I guess I should go hang out by one of Pittsburgh’s pollution infested rivers and see if I feel any better in this heat.

My skin care routine is probably way less natural and way more harsh that Proactive. This girl got those bad genes from her Mama, but I definitely wish I didn’t have to spend as much time, money, energy, or harmful chemicals on my face as I do.

Have a great weekend, with plenty of time spent pool side!

  14. Alan is the next Betty Crocker! Honestly, the man can bake!

Misterman’s apartment complex looks pretty dang nice! The student apartments up here are so nast, you’d get an STD walking in half of them! Those pancakes look bangin’ 🙂 You need some Greek parfaits in your life luv-bug! After you layer it and take it’s picture, the secret is mashing it all up like your 3 years old – tasty!

My beauty routine: nada in the morning! At night I use Clean and Clear Oil Free Foaming Facial Cleanser and Clinique’s moisturizer. ProActiv never worked for me so that was pitched a long time ago! CONGRATS TO YOUR BRO!!!

  15. 15 Sarah

as much as i hate to admit it, reassurance from others helps SO much!

and alan and that peanut butter fudge!!! if i lived in athens, you can bet he would be MY barber.

i’m jealous of misterman’s pool! it looks lovely, even half full. i’m the same way about heat though — if there’s no ocean breeze or shade, i can hardly hold out an hour!

mamaj’s peach pancakes … no words! enjoy the graduation! congrats to matty rich!

  16. i haven’t laid out yet this summer…kind of scared of wrinkles…..but now your blog is really making me want to!

  17. 17 Rika

First off, I’m a new commenter but I’ve been readin and lovin’ your cute blog oh so much. 😛

Wow your skin looks so natural that I didn’t know that you used any products!! Well, what I use is something called BIO-OIL. It’s natural (from what I’m aware of?), smells nice, and its for multipurpose use like.. for wrinkles, stretchmarks, and acne, uneven skin tones! It’s a huge hit in asian countries and recently has been making its appearance in US at pharmacies such as Walgreen, CVS, and possibly some Rite-Aid.

Rika! Thank you so much for commenting and for the awesome recommendation! Something from the drug store is exactly what I need! And that product sounds magical.

  18. no skin care products…just SPF 45-50 for when I’m out in the sun!!!

  19. That peanut butter fudge looks out of this world – it kind of makes me wish that I could pick a piece out of the picture. Like Mike Teevee did in Charlie in the Chocolate Factory. Alas, technology disappoints me 😦

Your meals are fantastic – and I have totally fallen in love with your blog.

    Sexy legs too!

    • 21 snackface

Ashley–Thank you for falling in love with my blog! That means so much to me 🙂 Haha I’ve always wanted to be able to lick a fruit wall-papered wall and taste the fruit. That dream will never die!

  20. I used to use proactive and a couple other things but once I started doing silk peels with the esthetician at my derms office she recommended a product from their office (but of course she did!). So, I use DDF Glycolic Exfoliating Wash with the Clarisonic Skin Brush. I am liking the face wash so far but I am in LOVE with the Clarisonic though…. I have had it since Christmas and my skin has never looked better.

My sister has that same coffee mug from Anthropologie!

  21. 23 Tina

    That pb fudge is insane!!

  22. Sugar alcohols in the muffin thing probably come from vanilla extract. If you read the ingredients on the back of a bottle of vanilla extract you’ll see it.
