You Know What the Midwest Is?
Young and restless. That line from a Kanye West song perfectly sums up how I’ve been for the past several days. I have tons to share! Buckle your seatbelts, ’cause we gonna be ridin’ dirty…
The sun was showing off that day, which always leads to students starting their, uh, partying relatively early. Before I let my social life take flight, I managed to fit a few things into the day. I started the glorious day with a workout on the elliptical, followed by abs-tacular workouts and a bit of stretching.
My appetite was absent Friday, but I did need some fuel. I’d wanted to try this bar I’d seen on Jenna’s blog, so I picked it up the moment I found it.
I like to think I’m pretty lenient when it comes to liking food. That is, it doesn’t take much for me to enjoy it. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with this bar. Chocolate flavor, where are you? It didn’t taste bad at all, it just didn’t taste chocolatey in the least. I plated the other half with an apple. This is my contribution to the raw food trend that is taking the blog world by storm:
All I really wanted was that crispy, juicy, tarty Granny Smith. I spent the rest of the afternoon–get this– painting my nails, listening to music and trying on outfits. You will find later that the trying on outfits was a lost cause.
For some reason this took me hours. It was enjoyable, though! I used to spend evenings in junior high playing with makeup and trying on outfits. I felt like a self-conscious adolescent again. Nah, not really. I was just checkin’ out my booty the whole time.
Eventually I had this bizarre wrap:
It was tasty, but odd. Shortly after this, I laid out with MisterMan. This was his idea and he gave me a hard time that I did not don my bikini top to soak in the sun. I’m sorry, but I am not going to walk around College Green in bright-orange triangles that are held together by strings if there isn’t water involved. Plus, I’m not one for tanning.
Laying out didn’t last long, and I soon met up with Muffin. A Friday night outfit was never worn because we went straight to Rio to meet fellow Post friends (crazy news people). I wore this all night WITH a messenger bag filled with school work. I’m such a fashionista I can hardly stand it:
At least I was comfortable all night. Muffin looked fab, though.
I don’t have any other food pictures from Friday, but know that I may have eaten my weight in chips and salsa at Rio Grande. The rest of the night was spent frollicking uptown and eventually ended at Muffin’s house. A party was held in honor of one of Muffin’s roomies’ boyfriend, Mike. He’s Austrian, so that was the theme. Yes, I belted DoReMe from the Sound of Music for everyone. I thought it was a brilliant performance at the time.
I woke up Saturday feeling as though I was going to hurt someone if I wasn’t fed soon. Ok no, I’m not really that violent. I made a killer yogurt bowl:
In that bowl (well, I’m reaching here, trying to remember): 1/2 C Stonyfield fat free plain yogurt, 1/2 naner, strawberries, Kashi Honey Sunshine, Kashi Heart to Heart, uncooked oats, Smucker’s All Natural p.b. A porny breakfast to start the day!
There is this sickness that takes over students when the weather is nice. Its symptoms include, but are not limited to: procrastinating, lying in the sun when they should be doing work, reading blogs when they should be doing work, catching a severe case of writers’ block, thus causing them stress and anxiety. I was hit hard by all of the above Saturday afternoon. I swear I tried my best to finish a rough draft of a magazine department piece, but it was not in the cards.
I ate to take away the stress…and hunger of course. Loved me some leftovers:
As you may have guessed from looking at the picture, the salad was a delightful mix of romaine, broccoli slaw, tomatoes, celery and chickpeas. Coated in a balsamic vinaigrette, this salad filled me to the brim. For two hours, tops. Oh, and that pizza was even better cold. I believe I had a pretzel rod with hummus at that two-hour point after lunch.
I did wash my sheets and other laundry Saturday– a huge accomplishment. MisterMan swept me away from my procrastination frustration and took me to Stroud’s Run, a lake area. We lay on the “beach” and stared at this:
The lake was actually sparkling. Phenomenal.
An hour or two later, MisterMan and I headed to our favorite Athens restaurant, Casa Nueva. We started off with the must-have baked red corn tortilla chips and three different salsas:
Honestly, chips and salsa equal the weekend to me. I adore them. I had this little organic salad to stop me from fighting MisterMan for the chips:
The greens were delicate and the dressing was outstanding. I’m really digging ginger lately. After the salad came the real heffer, Dinner # 2 (the dish’s actual title):
“A two layer stacked enchilada with vegan queso cremoso, Sauteed Peanut-Soy Marinated Tofu and veggies of the day, topped with Red Chile Roasted Garlic Salsa, and served with Jasmine Rice and Southwestern Black Beans.” I had an all-vegan dinner, from start to finish. This entree is richly flavorful, super spicy and very filling. I had one layer of the corn tortillas with all the filling, and left the rice and beans. I was stuffed!
After dinner I met up with my roomie, Morgan, for Nigerian 101 Night. It was held in a dining hall, which I wasn’t thrilled about, but I wanted to spend some time with Morgan. Plus, I didn’t know anything about Nigerian culture, so I was interested to know.
Unfortunately, Morgan was starving and unsatisfied with the dinner they served, thus causing us to leave early. I grabbed a plate and tried tiny bites of everything you see here:
I’m sure these dishes can be delicious when served at the right temperatures and not made for mass numbers of people, but I did not enjoy this. I was excited about the smashed yam ball because I thought it would magically taste like sweet potatoes. Nope, not at all. More like cardboard. However, the yam is used to scoop soup, and I believe it would taste great that way. The plaintains and donut were cold and rubbery, and the refried bean square had chopped hard-boiled eggs in it, which give me the heeby-jeebies.
That night Muffin and I went out again with our Post friends. We had a great time chatting with them, but when we left to check out other bars, I was disgusted and did not want to be out. People had been drinking all day and could hardly stand, walk or speak. It was sad, to say the least. More than anything, though, I wanted to make sure everyone made it home alright. Anyway, here is another non-going out outfit that I donned. My messenger bag was still full of notebooks, too 🙂
Fashion DON’T moment on my part. Tube tops are not flattering on me; I don’t know why I go for them. Had to get that out there.
I was ready to call it a night at midnight. I met up with MisterMan, who walked me home to ensure I made it safely. We also had our first fight ever. I won’t go into details. All you need to know is that we’re good now…and that I’m still right, damnit. Haha!
I got cracking on the h-dub immediately after this breakfast:
This breakfast fueled me from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. I spent the entire time writing that magazine department piece. It felt so good to get a rough draft finished. I had the other half of the banana before I showered, dressed and got ready for lunch. Of course, I had another wrapple–wrap, apple combo–:
Digestion took place and then I went to the library for a couple hours. I had to finish creating a book cover in photoshop. I’ve learned that I do not get along with photoshop. I wanted to pull out my hair at one point, but MisterMan came to the rescue and helped me a bit. I noshed on a Kashi Peanut Peanut Butter granola bar once I got things flowing smoothly.
Then I played with technology some more at Kinkos. Me and copy machines also are not friends. By the time I made it home, I was tired and drenched from the rain. I was silly and wore sandals. Uhh, come on Kailey, it was an overcast day. I threw together a quick salad before a capella practice:
Romaine, broccoli slaw, celery, toms, green bell peppers and chickpeas were dressed in a raspberry vinagrette. I like to sugar-coat something that should be pure and simple. To make sure I got enough glucose, I had several of these after dinner:
Let’s talk about these for a second. They are incredibly yummy, but would you eat something that “May Contain: milk ingredients, peanuts, SHELLFISH, sesame seeds, eggs.” Wait a tick. Shellfish? How the hell would that get in my Cinnamon Thin?
I moved right along to a capella practice, which wasn’t as productive as it could have been. Absences are killing us! You know what killed me, though? Staying up till 3 a.m. I had to edit my paper! I had some pretzels with hummus, as well as a Wasa cracker with Mighty Maple to keep me awake:
Eventually I made it to bed for a 3.7-hour catnap (guesstimate).
This is the only breakfast I want after having stayed up too late and hurting my poor body:
Two cups of black coffee were consumed with this as well. I could barely dress myself this morning. Do you ever stand in front of your closet and think, “I don’t like anything in here.” That thought paralyzed me for a while.
Magazine class was great. We swapped department stories and edited them. It felt amazing to get that thing out of my hands. Relieved, I walked back home in the rain to my early Monday lunch. Groceries are low, so here is another wrap, this time with a Laughing Cow in there and carrots with mustard on the side:
I crammed in some more work before my 1-3, 3-5, 5-7 classes. Here are the highlights/lowlights of the afternoon.
1. Got my Mojo back:
2. The guy next to me in the 1-3 class insisted on writing me notes the whole time. I’m sorry, but I like to focus on what the teacher is saying. I don’t need to know that your fave restaurant is Crapplebee’s and you secretly love romantic comedies.
3. Have you ever gone to wipe, not realizing you weren’t finished peeing and then got some droplettes on your hand? Nope? Well, I did that today.
4. A juicy whitehead on my chin tripled in size by the time I got home at 7.
What made the day better, you wonder? Cheetah taters and tofu fries:
To compliment this, I had a baby salad of romaine, toms, green bell pepper and wasabi-roasted edamame:
I didn’t give a hoot about that salad, though. We all know the real star:
So how we feelin’ after that doozy of a post? Little tired of the SnackFace? I understand.
WE HAVE A WINNER of the OIKOS COUPON! I will be sending a coupon and goodies to lucky number…
24. Tra!- I’ve got your email, so be expecting to hear from me 🙂
You’re all caught up on most of my eats, treats, activities, and bodily functions. I hope you’ve enjoyed, laughed, cringed, and most of all, smiled throughout the post. I send my love.
Ciao for now,
